Question Total Carbs vs actual carbs? Please explain

In regard to calculating how many grams of carbs you are getting, how does fiber count?

Do you subtract the fiber grams from total grams to get the actual carb grams you are getting? What about sugar grams if any?

Example: my whole grain bread has listed per slice...

Total carbs: 16 g
Fiber 5 g
Sugar 3 g

so how many actual grams of carbs do I get per slice...16, 11, 8?

Hopefully someone can help. Thanks!
