I dont know about you but when I am heading towards facing a challenge straight on I play a game in my head. I go through a bunch of scenarios of what could happen and eventually what I want to happen kind of visualizing my desired result. In this case I am getting ready to do what has worked best in the past while leading a fairly "normal" lifestyle. When I give you the details you probably may think Im crazy or a little militant and in certain senses I am. Let me give you an example which is very current for me right now.
Being very competitive and athletic most of my life I am probably in the highest body fat percentage i have ever been. For me this is strange as I usually lean out and shrink as opposed to bulk when I become inactive.. possibly this was as a result of the depression i went through after -
injuring myself and not being able to train thus getting way out of shape relative for me.

2- having some financial challenges
3- having marital problems

So the combination was bad for me to the point I got in a rut.

Now I am at a point where it is do or die but the rules I can play by have changed drastically. IN the past being on the Canadian National Olympic Tae Kwon Do team and weight training very intense for many years I have basically worn myself out to the point where my body at 39 is equivalent to probably a 55-60 year old. I cant hit the training head on like I used to and see miraculous change in 4 to five weeks anymore.
But at the same time my mind is much more focused and I can get more done with less effort as each bit of energy I exert counts for two times possibly three times the results I used to get when younger.
I also am at the point where even if I dont train my arms dont go under 19" cold.
So my biggest challenge is nutrition..and done the way I know diet plays the most dramatic effect in my training routine.
eg if I train 6 days a week but eat poor Ill look poor . If i train 1 or two times per week but eat smart I will look and feel 110 percent as well as have high energy levels.

So to me nutrition is the key and thus I am putting my focus towards my diet and "Hard Hitting Nutrition"
Bear with me here I usually dont like talking about myself so much .As a matter of fact I am a Dad and rarely are things about me anymore,so talking about myself so much here actually feels "selfish"
So my nutritional regimen of choice right now is going to be ketogenics.
My system of a keto diet. The reasons for me to go this route are as follows:
dont have to eat every two hours so I can live without worrrying about taking food with me where ever I go or have to watch the clock interrupting my "life" to eat.

Its all or nothing. If I have a little bit of carbs or cheat my diet is done for thus i am much more obligated to stick to it.

Less hunger pains and cravings. I dont get the usual low blood sugar induced carb cravings when in ketosis like I do when on a low carb diet.

The main key to my success is to cut out all liquid intake except for plenty of clean water.
No diet pop no juices, no milk or dairy.
Just water.
Why no diet pops or diet artificial sweetener?
I find between myself and all the testing I have done with others ingesting a little artificial sweetener desensitizes my pallete thus making my actual diet harder to follow. I get used to eating sweets and start to want to eat sweet foods which are not an option on a keto diet.
Actually most simple sugars and sweet foods even fruit are not an option when all out fat loss is the goal. So why tease myself.

The other reason is one of health. I find my overall well being suffers when I eat artificial sweeteners. I get a slight head ache that lingers with me all day long.

eating is kind of like a drug addiction I find. everywhere I go I see these "quick fix" foods that are just plain crap.
eg fast foods, diet pops, all the candy at any gas station or cashier checkout. Its all so tempting but the delight received from ingesting these items is temporary, but the side effects stick around long after you have finished eating. Its not worth it. And what is so F#$k%d up is the media has brainwashed society to believe all this shit is normal, not too bad in small doses etc. Look at all the health issues now a days. So much of it is mis diagnosed so all these little toxic Demons are alive and strong in most peoples lives right under their noses and they just dont /cant see it...
I find that my personal strength and will is held in a tank. When I continually do the little baby steps leading towards my goals my will tank continues to fill up=,my momentum increases ,my personal strength keeps growing.
But if i dont do what I told myself I was going to do my tank gets depleted I feel guilty and soon get low on energy and depressed. There is no way out of this depression except for facing my fear or challenge head on and conquering it. No drug no comforting self talk, all that stuff just adds to the problem and not the solution. I hope Im not getting too out to left field here. As this is a blog I am actually just writing away my thoughts as i have them / I am not writing to entertain or sell anything . Just doing what a blog was originally developed to do. Seems like blogging has evolved to something totally different than being a personal diary as the first blogging was intended to be...
So Im thinking of documenting this next physical journey on video for all to see. If you would like to see this let me know. I will show it in real time documenting every little detail on my road back to optimal fitness for all to see. How i handle all the daily challenges and road blocks that inhibit most people from ever reaching their fitness goals. Let me know if you would be interested in seeing this "video Blog/diary " If you would then Ill post the videos here.

Bacon & Egg Ice Cream... mmm bacon

Ok, the last couple of months I've been side tracked from my goal of finding the optimal recipe for MRP ice cream.

While doing a bit more experimentation this weekend I made some standard egg custard ice cream, but instead of putting in a lot of sugar I left out quite a bit of it.

What resulted was something that reminded me of a scrambled egg milkshake... actually it didn't taste all that bad, just a tad too sweet and missing something...

Hmmm let me see.... how about... BACON!

Now I'm not the first person to think of this, in fact Bacon & Egg ice cream is all over the internet.

I did a bit of research in hopes to refine my recipe.

* I'm going to add brown sugar to my bacon and cook it separately in the oven beforehand. For those averse to pork, you can use turkey bacon.

* I will add the bacon to the ice cream mix after about 20 minutes of mixing.

* I'm using one of the great wonder of the modern world DHA egg yolks to add some good fat.

* I'm going to add about 2 scoops of natural flavor whey protein that I have premixed in cream (used in custard recipe)

This should add a nice amount of protein without causing any texture/taste issues.

I will report back here with the results.

Where to go from here ??

Hi Guys , I am pretty new to weight Gaining / Training . I have been traveling for a few years and haven't been able to establish a routine for long enough to really get serious about putting on some lbs . However I have been training the last ten weeks or so and _loosely_ following AE s Gaining Mass program. When I started I weighed in at 72 kilos which is about 158lbs and am currently 76 kilos (167 lbs) . I am quiet happy with my _few_ new lbs as I feel I have only been getting familar with the program . But now I have all my supplements ready, routine worked out and am ready to get serious for the next 8 weeks before I leave to go traveling again......but I hit a little temptation hurdle today when looking through the E book downloads......**THE 30 DAY TRANSFORMATION PROGRAM**
This sounds ideal for me because I have only a short period of time to bulk up and Jason Ferruggia says I can burn fat while gaining muscle also! Is this true ???? Obviously this guy knows what he is talking about with the amount of experience he has under his belt . But the words of Anthony Ellis are niggling at the back of my mind saying "You Cannot gain muscle and burn fat at the same time"
So I ask you guys to please help me decide which direction I go from here ???? My goal is to be about 80 - 85 Kilos in 8 weeks time but I also want to have good definition on my abs for when I hit the beaches of Thailand in Dec .:) I have good definition everywhere else apart from my belly which is a _little_ bit flabby at the moment .
I am ready to hit the ground running and put 100% into this for the next 8 weeks ......As soon as I am sure which direction I should be going !!
So Option A . Stick with AEs program and just put on muscle mass and then after 8 weeks go on the Fat loss program....or
Option B . Go for the 30 day transformation program and try loose the belly while gaining less muscle .?
Would love to hear your opinions guys and gals .
Thanks

It takes a lot of sleep, some food, and the willingness not to work too much :)

The purpose of this blog is to expose what I'm learning, as well as what I'm wrong about so that I can get advice and corrections from all of my muscle building friends on massology.

For a thorough introduction to me, check my "Introduce yourself" thread reply. As for today

Tue 9/23
I had 2 wisdom teeth pulled and I'll have to wait a few days to resume exercise, because my dentist doesn't want me to risk popping open my stitches. I'm looking forward to getting in the next contest when I recover, and find my copy of the gaining mass manual (or find a link to the e-manual). I've already found my workbooks while cleaning my home office.

Yesterday, I checked my weight for the first time since 8/17 (amazing that I got too caught up in everything else too do this simple step). To my amazement I had gained 8 lbs!

Sun 8/17 140 lbs
Mon 9/22 148 lbs

The truth is it probably took less than these 4 weeks, and it actually took a lot more as well. What do I mean? Let me clarify...

8 LBS in 4 YEARS:
I decided to gain mass in 2004, and bought Anthony Ellis' course. I wanted to have a better understanding of health, have a more impressive figure (not represent skinniness), be able to pick up lots of kids at the same time (children love being picked up and carried around).

Although I read most of the course material, I didn't take the time to understand it, I didn't earn/budget the money for the nutrition, and I didn't take the time to practice/learn the exercises. I was also somewhat afraid of hurting myself my doing the exercise, and eating wrong. Until just a few weeks ago... I committed to spending the money, time, and energy.

So you could say it took me 4 years to gain 8 lbs, but it was really just 4 years to stop worrying, get out of analysis paralysis, and commit to spending the time, money, and energy.

Simply put, I decided my body was important enough to commit to spending the time, money, and energy. I also got to the point where I knew enough that I didn't feel it would be dangerous; and I actually started to feel like I was going out of my way not to have the body I wanted.

8 LBS in LESS THAN 4 WEEKS:
On Sunday 8/17 when I weighed myself, I was still not eating or exercising adequately. In particular I was consuming about 49%, 140%, and 7% of my planned protein, carbs, and fat. (and I wasn't going for 1.8 gr/lb, I was going for 1.5 gr/lb).

During the next 3 weeks I gradually increased my protein, but only on workout days (3 days weekly). It was only in the last 2 weeks that I started taking a protein shake before bed (I thought that was wasteful before :) ), and made sure to take a shake within 30 min of the workout. In the last week I made sure that I had protein before sleeping and after waking on non-workout days as well. 2 weeks ago was the first time I actually went to failure on each exercise (3 sets of 4-7 reps). Previously I was doing 2 sets of 15-20 moderately hard reps. An the last 3 sessions have been all body weight!

I'm simply confident enough about what I'm doing as well as committed to getting results. The funny thing is that I got so involved in the other details these last couple weeks that I forgot about measuring until yesterday. And trust me, as confident as I've gotten about exercise and dieting, I had really given up believing that I could ever gain weight - what a pleasant surprise!

CONCLUSION!
Although it took me 4 years to make a commitment and get to working correctly, it was really easy to gain weight. I'm pretty sure it was only the last week (possibly the last 2) where I actually put on the 8 lbs (it's so important to track constantly).

I'm proud of myself for not jumping in when I didn't know how safe it was, but I'm embarrassed that I waited 4 years to figure out how safe it was. Google is so easy (Thanks to Anthony Ellis, Anthony Wallis, Malek256, and Caleb Lee).

1. I thought Exercising, then Eating, (forget sleeping :) ) were the most important.

I found that Sleeping, THEN Eating, THEN Exercising are the most important.

2. I thought I had to spend a lot of time in the gym and learn thousands of exercises.

I found that I had to get 7-8 hours of sleep daily (and every hour before midnight has the effect of 2), because that's when the muscle is actually building. Most people don't rest the muscle enough to get back to the size it was before stressing it, so they definitely don't rest it for enough time to let it actually get bigger!

I found that eating before sleep, after waking, and hour before exercising, and 30 minutes after exercising is where the actual muscle gain comes from (many people are just working or toning their muscles or dangerously shredding them, but they can't heal and grow bigger without food - duh! :) )

I found that a squat or deadlift followed by 2 or 3 other exercises stopping at failure gets much better results then doing a big long workout with dozens of exercises (indirect resistance leads the whole body to work when major compound muscles are working). Going slow and giving the muscles time to rest is what will make them hungry for all that food you're eating (or leave them ripped and tiny if you're not eating).

IN A NUTSHELL:
It takes 49 hours of SLEEP, 7 hours of EATING, and only 90 minutes of exercising each week!

1. 7 Hours daily sleep (sleep before 12)

2. 1 Hour daily eating (5 seconds when you wake up to drink a shake, 5 seconds before bed to drink a shake, 5 seconds after the workout to drink a shake, and the rest of that hour is spread throughout the day eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner for 15-20 minutes per meal). Of course you can spend as long as you want eating, but unlike sleeping it doesn't matter how long you spend - what matters is what type of calories you're getting.

3. 90 minutes weekly exercising. 3 30 minute sessions of correct exercising. should be about 20 minutes lifting, 10 minutes warming up. (And to be fair you need another 5-10 minutes of stretching as well).

Peace!

Peace!

Should I work chest and shoulders on separate days?

This question, I've always pondered about.

Anthony Ellis' book (the edition I have) suggests doing them on the same day.

Yet when you talk to most serious or veteran lifters they tell you to do them on separate days.

So, what's the right answer?

From what I can tell, it seems that beginners should work them on the same day, but those who have been consistently lifting a while should definitely do them on separate days.

A beginner typically starts out with 3 workouts a week. Most people will end up overtraining if they attempt more work than that. With only 3 workouts a week, if you want to hit all body parts once per week, chest and shoulders pretty much have to be worked on the same day.

But serious lifters almost always go to the gym more freqently than that. They usually train 4 or 5 times a week. Obviously they have built up their bodies to handle the extra workouts. In this case, it makes sense to hit less body parts in any given workout session.

Serious lifters are working out very intense, and generally do not want to go beyond the recommended 45 to 1hr session. This time limit is easier to keep if you don't have as many exercises to perform.

And finally I considered the advice from one guy to do them on separate days - his shoulders were a LOT more developed than mine making him look a lot wider. If anything, advice should flow downhill in this endeavor.

Hey guys, im just getting things in order to start the program and before i go out and buy any protein shakes i wanted to know if you had any suggestions for me? I was looking at Myoplex but it seems fairly expensive. I dont know if thats because its individually packaged or what, but 50 bucks for 20 pouches seems like alot. If you have any other brands with the same protein/cal/carb values let me know, as i want to get started as soon as i can, while i have the motivation =)

Thanks to anyone that can help!

ps maybe someone knows where you can get myoplex cheaper than $47 for 20 pouches because thats the cheapest ive seen so far at GNC and SND... let me know! thanks again...

So, it's been 1 week in my break. I literally cant take it anymore. I seriosely want to go to the gym and workout. I actually miss it :/. I don't know. It seems because of my recent gains I've been addicted to wanting more.

I want to get bigger. I have technically hit 150 lbs. It felt so good going to the scale and seeing myself weighing 150 lbs. I seriosely never imagined that day would come. I want more though. I want this break to be over and get back to working out. That with school is pretty much my life. Kinda sad, but...no pain no gain?

I've been suffering silently for years.

My sites are probably some of the most ripped-off fitness websites online today.

I can understand that people use my site as a template to create their own website & products.

But some don't even bother to create their own...They just copy my site, change the name and then run with it.

That is an extreme case and has happened several times. The last was by a *doctor *no less. When I confronted him, he stated that he just didn't have time to create his own site.

WTF?

Less bold individuals simply copy bits of my text, my many catchy quotes :) , testimonials and even my images directly for use in their own marketing and web material.

Well finally, after all these years of thinking I was alone, I see that others are experiencing the same pain of having their hard work & sweat just flat out stolen.

http://forums.jpfitness.com/personal-trainers-issues/31731-guru-laziness.html

It's bad enough that suddenly these guys claim to be "experts" right out of the box, but they can't even create there own material.

This just plain sucks.
