Default deadlift substitution?

i think this was covered before (i think i may have asked about it before too) but i couldn't find the thread:

is there a good substitution for deadlifts that isn't as harsh on the lower back....simply because i have chronic backpain due to scoliosis and lifting things that way always aggrivates it..i really do my best not to aggrivate it because the pain can get pretty bad if im not careful

thanks
